The history of Heineken

The story of this iconic lager begins in 1864 when 22-year-old Gerard Adriaan Heineken purchased the brewery De Hooiberg in Amsterdam. This marked the beginning of what would become one of the most recognisable beer brands in the world.

By 1875, a second brewery opened in Rotterdam, focusing on low-fermentation (bottom-fermented) beers, which was a major shift in Heineken brewing techniques at the time.

In 1886, a student of Louis Pasteur developed the famous Heineken “A-Yeast.” This proprietary yeast strain remains central to the flavour profile of Heineken today, delivering its signature clean, balanced taste.

By 1887, Heineken had fully transitioned to bottom-fermented lager production, laying the foundation for what would become one of the most successful lagers in history.
