The modern beer snack is a thing of beauty. A small but mighty companion to a great pint. Beer and food pairing is now part of everyday drinking culture, but not every occasion calls for a three-course meal with matching beers. Sometimes, you just want to go low, salty and satisfying. That’s where beer snacks and beer munchies really shine. Standout beer snacks (UK pub classics, reinvented) It wasn’t always this way. Back in the day, UK beer & nibbles meant peanuts, crisps, or a pickled egg that looked the colour of regret. Today’s beer snacks are far more exciting: artisanal Scotch eggs (not just pork), flavoured nuts and seeds, battered gherkins and revived classics like pork scratchings. Even the humble pickled egg has had a glow-up. But even casual beer munchies need balance. You don’t want your snack and beer fighting it out on the palate. Harmony is key. Pork scratchings & bold beer pairings Let’s start with the venerable pork scratching, which is a true UK beer snack with surprising variety. From single-cooked scratchings with a fatty layer, to puffed-up double-cooked versions, this salty classic demands a beer with backbone. Traditionally paired with mild ale in the West Midlands, today’s tastes lean bolder. A hop-forward IPA like Lagunitas IPA brings tropical fruit, dryness and punch — perfect for cutting through salt and crunch. It turns this humble UK beer & snack combo into something globally inspired. Also works well: Brixton Reliance Pale Ale: softer bitterness, tropical fruit notes, extremely drinkable Heineken: a lighter option that keeps things refreshing and simple Scotch eggs: the ultimate beer munchie If IPAs had a snack equivalent, it would be the Scotch egg. Once dull and grey, it’s now a star of modern beer & nibbles culture. It's made with pork, black pudding, or even vegetarian fillings. The best match here has go to be a Brixton Reliance Pale Ale. It's bright citrus hops and a smooth malt backbone work beautifully with sausage meat and breadcrumb coatings, without overpowering the snack itself. Also worth trying: Affligem Blonde: subtle spice, gentle sweetness and a dry finish Edelweiss Hefetrüb: soft wheat, banana and clove notes for a lighter, rounded pairing Pickles, brined snacks & salty fish Pickled onions, gherkins, pickled herring or anything briny needs carbonation and dryness. We'd go for a Gösser Märzen. It's clean, malty and gently bitter, with enough carbonation to lift salt and acidity without clashing. Great alternatives: Edelweiss Hefetrüb: soft acidity and wheat freshness Birra Moretti L'Autentica: crisp, uncomplicated and highly sessionable Cheese boards & grazing plates For mixed snack plates (nuts, cheeses, olives, cured meats) versatility is key. The best all-rounder? Affligem Blonde. Balanced sweetness, gentle bitterness and classic Belgian yeast character make this a brilliant companion for everything from mature cheddar to salty nuts. Also excellent: Heineken Silver: ultra-clean and refreshing Amstel: smooth, lightly malty and easy to keep pouring Snack pairing rule of thumb Salty & fatty → hops or carbonation Savoury & rich → balance and dryness Pickled & sharp → freshness over bitterness Low effort snacks, great beer, and no need for a three-course pairing menu.
