The holiday season is about more than twinkling lights, cheesy jumpers, and questionable karaoke. It’s about shared moments, warm gatherings, and that unmistakable festive feeling. And at the heart of it all? The perfect Christmas beer — rich, spiced, and ready to spread cheer. In this guide, we explore the warming world of festive beers: where they come from, how they’ve evolved, what makes them special, and which ones are worth stocking in your fridge this December. We’ll also shine a light on regional styles, brewers' perspectives, and the latest seasonal trends — because Christmas beer is more than just a drink... it’s a tradition. What is a Christmas beer? Brewed specifically for the colder months, these seasonal favourites are often stronger, darker, and more flavourful than their year-round cousins. They’re brewed to be savoured, and often feature festive ingredients like: Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and orange peel Roasted malts and dark sugars While there’s no single style that defines a “Christmas beer,” they all share a common goal: to comfort and delight when the nights are long and the jumpers are thick. In short: if it makes you want to curl up next to a fire, it probably qualifies. A deeper look: the history of Christmas beers Christmas beers weren’t born in a branding meeting. They’re steeped in centuries of brewing culture. In medieval Europe, monasteries were the epicentres of brewing innovation. Monks weren’t just making beer for sustenance. They made special brews to mark sacred occasions, with Christmas being the most celebrated. These festive brews were often darker, stronger, and richer than everyday ales. Local ingredients like honey, herbs, spices, and dried fruit were used to create something truly special. Not only did these additions improve shelf-life, but they also symbolised abundance and joy. By the 17th and 18th centuries, wealthier households in Northern Europe brewed their own strong winter ales to be shared and savoured. Come the 19th century, industrialisation brought these festive brews to a broader public, with breweries across Europe releasing seasonal beers for the masses. What started as monastic celebration became a community ritual. Regional variations: Christmas beers around the world Just like Christmas dinner looks different around the globe, so do the beers that go with it. Here’s how different regions add their unique twist to festive brewing: 🇧🇪 Belgium: rich, spiced, and reverent In Belgium, bières de Noël are a point of pride. These strong ales (often over 9% ABV) are bottle-conditioned and bursting with flavour: dark fruits, caramel, clove, and warming alcohol. Think St. Bernardus Christmas Ale, Delirium Noël, or Avec Les Bons Vœux. 🇬🇧 UK: malty, mellow winter warmers British Christmas beers lean into tradition with malt-forward profiles and subtle spicing. They’re smooth, mellow, and ideal for pairing with roast dinners or Christmas pudding. Look for names like Old Ale, Winter Warmer, or Festive Bitter. 🇩🇪 Germany: bocks over bells German brewers embrace the season with Weihnachtsbier and Doppelbocks — strong lagers that offer clean, rich malt character without much spice. Expect balance and smoothness, often enjoyed with hearty food during the holidays. 🇳🇴 Norway: ancient law of Juleøl In Norway, it was once law to brew Juleøl for Christmas. That reverence continues today with dark, smoky beers sometimes brewed with juniper or spruce. Many families have their own cherished recipes, and local brews are a source of national pride. 🇺🇸 USA: creative and bold American craft brewers don’t shy away from flavour. Expect gingerbread stouts, peppermint porters, and Christmas tree IPAs. It’s bold, fun, and often inspired by dessert. Think cinnamon rolls, s’mores, or eggnog all in beer form. Why are Christmas beers stronger, darker & spiced? Brewing in winter used to be both practical and symbolic. Before refrigeration, the colder months were ideal for fermentation, and beer brewed in winter was often stored for longer. That required a stronger alcohol content and heartier malt base, which became hallmarks of the winter beer profile. Spices added flavour and preservation. Dark malts added warmth and depth. The result? Beers that could sit on a shelf and still taste incredible by the fire. This tradition lives on in modern Christmas beers, which are still brewed to warm the body and the spirit. Are there Christmas beer festivals? In short - yes! In the 90s, several OBERs (Objective Beer Tasters) from Germany took the initiative to bring all Belgian Christmas beer and winter beers together. What once started as a local festival with 40 beers, has now become a true phenomenon. The Christmas Beer Festival is one of the best beer festivals in Belgium. Christmas beer lovers come from far and wide to taste Christmas beers and Christmas Ales for the weekend. The visitors also vote for their favourite Christmas beer.
