Traditionally, when people ask what is American beer, they often think of light, easy-drinking lagers. But the modern American beer scene tells a very different story. Thanks to the craft beer revolution, the U.S. is now famous for bold, hop-forward brews. And nothing represents that better than the American IPA. If you love big aromas, citrus punch and a proper bitter finish, then this bold American hop beer style is for you. What is an American IPA? The American IPA (India Pale Ale) evolved from the classic British IPA, a style dating back over 200 years. But in the 1970s and 80s, pioneering U.S. brewers took that traditional template and supercharged it with locally grown American hop varieties. The result? A fresher, fruitier and often more intense version of the original. This is why any solid American craft beer guide has to start with IPA. American IPA characteristics If you're exploring American IPA characteristics, here’s what to expect: Appearance:Very similar to appearance of a pale ale, the colour ranges from burnt gold to an orange amber. They are often clear, although in recent years dry-hopping and unfiltered beers have gained popularity, creating that hazier look. Aroma:The American IPA is a complex beer style. The taste and aromas are defined by the strong hop character. That's why you can expect hops, lots of citrussy, hoppy aromas. Also prominent are floral, and fruity characters. Sometimes you will experience pine and resinous notes and even cut grass if they beer has been dry-hopped. Flavour:Compared to British IPAs, American versions lean less on earthy hops and more on expressive, aromatic American varieties like Cascade, Citra, Amarillo and Mosaic. This creates a more pronounced hop bitterness with a crisp malt backbone, bright citrus character and a bold, dry finish. The rise of bold American hop beer The American IPA is one of the defining styles of the craft beer revolution.
