Heineken - 8L BLADE Keg
When it comes to authentic island brewing, few do it better than the Texels beer brewery. Since 1999, this proudly independent Dutch brewery Texel beers producer has been crafting distinctive, characterful beers on the island of Texel using locally grown barley and wheat that quite literally capture the taste of the island.
You don’t just drink these beers. You taste Texel in every sip.
Texel is the largest of the Dutch Wadden Islands, located less than five kilometres from Den Helder on the mainland. But despite the short distance, island life shapes everything. Including the beer.
This unique location gives Texel island beer a distinctive advantage:
Texel enjoys more sunshine than much of the Netherlands
The barley and wheat develop thicker, high-quality granules
All grains are sourced directly from the island
The brewery also works exclusively with its own yeast culture, giving Dutch brewery Texel beers their recognisable soul and character. And because Texel is only accessible by ferry, every keg or bottle that reaches the mainland makes a journey, just like the visitors who come to discover it.
The Texels beer brewery is located in a former milk factory in Oudeschild. What was once a dairy production site has been transformed into a traditional brewing space filled with copper kettles and hands-on craftsmanship.
During a visit, brewery manager Janneke explains that much of the process remains traditional and manual. Despite modern success, the brewery keeps its authentic feel: something that becomes even more special when you realise the entire operation runs on an island.
Around half of the beer brewed here is enjoyed locally on Texel itself. The rest travels across the water to the mainland.
There are currently 12 different beers brewed in Oudeschild, offering plenty to explore within the Texel island beer range. From seasonal releases like Springtij and Bock to core favourites such as:
Goudkoppe (Blond)
Texel Tripel
Stormbock (Barley Wine)
And the iconic Texels Skuumkoppe beer
Each reflects the brewery’s philosophy: soft and accessible, yet often surprisingly robust.
The most famous of all Dutch beers from Texel is undoubtedly Texels Skuumkoppe beer. This amber-coloured wheat beer is approachable, but layered. Smooth, yet characterful. A true expression of the island.
While Skuumkoppe may be the flagship, Texel also produces more powerful styles.
A strong blond beer at 8.5% ABV, combining full sweetness with firm bitterness — everything you’d expect from a classic Tripel.
The heavyweight of the range at 10% ABV. This barley wine is rich, warming and best enjoyed slowly (ideally beside a crackling fire).
The defining features of the Texels beer brewery are simple but powerful:
Locally grown island grains
A unique house yeast strain
Traditional copper kettles
Top-fermentation only
A strong connection to Texel itself
This isn’t just beer brewed on an island, it’s beer shaped by it. Whether you visit Texel in person or simply pour a glass at home, these Texel island beers deliver something rare: authenticity rooted in place.
