Lager is undoubtedly the most consumed beer in the world. Its colour ranges from pale yellow to amber, and it is known for its easy drinkability.

What is lager?

Lager beer is brewed using bottom fermentation, where the yeast settles at the bottom of the fermentation vessel and works at lower temperatures. This process results in a clear, crisp, and often light beer with a clean taste. Lagers are typically less hoppy and bitter than ales. The longer fermentation period and cold storage contribute to a smooth, drinkable beer style that is beloved worldwide.

The difference between lager and pilsner

Brewing premium lager beer is quite challenging because even the smallest mistake during the brewing process can significantly affect the taste. Lager beer generally contains 4 to 6% alcohol and is enjoyed globally. Many people are unsure about the difference between lager and pilsner. Lagers are bottom-fermented beers that are cold-conditioned, while pilsner is a type of lager that is more hop-forward. A lager often has a mild flavour and can be either light or dark in colour. Pilsner, on the other hand, is light and refreshing with a noticeable hop bitterness, usually light yellow to gold in colour. Essentially, all pilsners are lagers, but not all lagers are pilsners.

The invention of pilsner

Before the 18th century, most beers were dark, but the invention of lager brought significant changes. The first pilsner was brewed in the Czech city of Pilsen with the goal of producing an easy-to-drink yet delicious beer. The mayor of Pilsen assigned this task to Josef Groll, who succeeded brilliantly.

The history of lager
